Eggs, Toast and Coffee on the Patio. Then One White Paw Appeared on the Table.
Sunshine warms the back patio, and breakfast is served on a little table: scrambled eggs, slices of toast topped with avocado, a wedge of cheese, a mug of coffee, and a glass of water. Grandpa Hank sits close in his red flannel, his hand resting on Rusty's back, gazing at the dog with a fond, slightly amused smile. Rusty, meanwhile, has made a bold move. One white paw is planted right on the tabletop next to the plate, and his eyes have drifted sideways, as if hoping nobody will notice. Potted plants, a garden chair, and an open sliding door complete the lazy morning scene.
That plate is a good example of why sharing breakfast with a dog takes a little thought. Plain cooked eggs are often fine in small amounts, and a tiny piece of plain cheese is a common training treat for dogs that tolerate dairy. Avocado is another story. It contains a substance that can upset some animals, and the large pit is a serious choking and blockage risk, so it is best kept off the dog menu. Buttered toast and fatty extras are better skipped too. Beagles are clever, persistent food hunters, so gently teaching them that paws stay on the ground at mealtime spares everyone from a stolen breakfast. Your vet can suggest healthy treat options.
Hank does not seem the least bit bothered by the paw on the table. Some rules soften when the company is this sweet and the sun is this warm.
