Grandpa Grabbed His Hammer to Fix the Fence. Rusty Showed Up With Supplies.

The back door is propped open, letting in cool air and a view of a weathered plank fence, and Grandpa Hank has brought the repair job right up to the threshold. With a hammer in one hand and a nail pinched in the other, he squints in concentration over a section of wooden boards. Slippers and work boots are lined up by the wall, a basket of rags sits nearby, and a thermos waits on the table behind him. Front and center, though, is Rusty. The Beagle has a twiggy stick clamped firmly in his jaws and is gazing at the camera with total seriousness, as though he has personally supplied the lumber.

Plenty of dogs love carrying sticks around, and Beagles, with their busy noses and playful streak, are no exception. Carrying is generally harmless fun, but chewing sticks can cause problems. Wood can splinter into sharp pieces that may injure the mouth or throat, and swallowed bits can upset the stomach. A safer swap is a sturdy chew toy or rubber stick-shaped toy made for dogs. It is also wise to keep a dog clear of active projects, because nails, screws, and wood scraps on the floor can be easy to step on or swallow. Giving your pup a designated job nearby, like holding a toy on a mat, can keep them included and out of harm's way.

Rusty would surely argue that his stick is the most important tool on site. Hank, wisely, is not going to disagree with his foreman.
