Every Evening at Sunset, Grandpa Ken and Mochi Walk the Same Quiet Road
The sun is sinking behind a line of trees, washing the sky in hazy peach, and a narrow country lane stretches ahead past a farmhouse porch and a chain-link fence. Grandpa Ken walks at an easy pace in an argyle sweater vest, short-sleeved gray shirt, and pressed khakis, a black leash looped loosely in one hand and a watch on his wrist. He is glancing down with a soft smile at Mochi, who trots a step ahead on her short legs, ears up, coat catching the golden light, looking utterly pleased with herself. Flower pots, a blue watering can, and a coiled garden hose line the edge of the yard they pass.
Daily walks are good for dogs of every size, and Yorkshire Terriers enjoy them as much as any big breed, even if their outings are shorter. Walks offer exercise, a chance to sniff and explore, and a mental workout that helps prevent boredom-driven mischief at home. For toy breeds, many vets recommend walking with a harness rather than clipping the leash only to a collar, since small dogs can be sensitive to pressure on the neck and throat. A well-fitted harness spreads the force across the chest. For older adults, a regular walk with a dog is also a gentle, steady way to stay active and get outside.
Ken and Mochi are not trying to get anywhere fast. The road is quiet, the air is cooling, and the best part of the evening is simply walking it together.
