Grandma Was Fixing the Fence Alone. Then Her Assistant Showed Up With Supplies.

Late afternoon sun warms the weathered boards as Odessa leans over the fence, glasses on, carefully working at a loose rail with her hands. A blue bucket and a pair of work gloves lie in the grass behind her, and a garden climbs up the posts in the background. Pip is very much on the job too. He has reared up on his hind legs, front paws braced on the bottom rail, and is clamping a long knobby stick in his jaws as if he has fetched the exact piece of lumber she needed. His scruffy whiskers and serious eyes suggest he takes his role as foreman quite seriously.

Dogs that carry sticks are often showing off their natural retrieving and carrying instincts, and for many it is simply fun. It is worth knowing, though, that sticks can splinter and cause injuries to the mouth or throat, especially during energetic games of fetch where a dog runs onto the end of one. Many owners swap real sticks for sturdy rubber or rope toys made for chewing and throwing. If your dog loves to carry things, give him a safe favorite to hold during chores. And during any repair project, keep nails, screws, and tools off the ground where curious paws and noses might find them.

The fence will stand straight again soon enough. Odessa will step back to admire her work, and Pip will probably drop his stick at her feet as if to say he did half of it. She might even agree.
