One Glass of Lemonade on a Hot Porch. Pip Was Absolutely Sure It Was for Him.
Ice clinks in a tall glass of lemonade as Odessa takes a slow sip through the straw, her reading glasses parked on top of her silver hair. The porch is shady and green, crowded with potted plants, a hanging basket, and a canvas bag tucked by the steps. Out past the railing, sunlight pours over the yard. Pip sits on the bench right beside her, brown collar snug around his neck, stretching his nose toward the glass with enormous interest. He has the look of a dog who is certain that whatever she is drinking must be delicious and should probably be shared.
It is sweet when a dog wants to taste everything we enjoy, but lemonade is best kept for people. Citrus can upset a dog's stomach, and sugary drinks offer nothing a dog needs. Some lemonades are sweetened with xylitol, a sugar substitute that is dangerous for dogs even in small amounts, so it is wise to check labels on anything sugar-free. On hot days, the best thing to offer is a bowl of fresh, cool water in the shade. A few ice cubes in the bowl can make it more interesting, and many dogs enjoy licking them. If your dog swallows something questionable, call your vet.
Odessa knows the rules, so Pip will have to settle for a good sniff and a scratch behind the ears. Honestly, that seems like a fair trade on a slow summer afternoon, with a breeze moving through the porch and nowhere else to be.
