The Storm Rolled In, and Frank and Dottie Headed Straight for the Porch
Rain pours off the porch roof in a silver sheet, flooding the lawn and blurring the houses across the street. Frank and Dottie sit snugly together on the bench under the eaves in their matching cream sweaters with blue snowflake patterns, smiling out at the storm like it's the best show in town. Biscuit sits right in front of them, wearing a blue collar with a little tag, his big ears tilted and his gaze fixed thoughtfully on something off to the side. Potted plants line the porch railing, and a jumble of garden chairs and pots crowds the corner.
Not every dog is relaxed during rainstorms. Some are sensitive to thunder, shifting air pressure, or even the sound of heavy rain on the roof. Signs of worry include panting, pacing, trembling, or trying to hide. Staying calm, offering a cozy retreat, and rewarding relaxed behavior can help. For dogs that are seriously frightened, your vet can discuss other options. After a rainy walk, Corgis' low-slung bodies tend to collect mud and water on their bellies and legs, so a towel by the door is a handy habit. Make sure their ID tags are current, since storm-scared dogs sometimes bolt.
Biscuit seems perfectly calm today, content to sit with his people while the world gets a good soaking. Some of the coziest afternoons happen when it rains.
