Earl Thought He Was Carving Something Special. Pearl Only Cared About the Scraps.

Curls of pale wood are piling up around the legs of Earl's old porch chair. He sits hunched forward with glasses on and suspenders pulled tight over his plaid shirt, carefully carving a small block of wood with a pocketknife. Every few strokes, another shaving drops to the weathered boards. Pearl has positioned herself right at the edge of the action, her fluffy white face lowered toward the floor and her whiskers almost brushing the shavings as she sniffs each new piece. Behind them, a watering can, a pair of gloves, potted plants, and a sunny yard set a calm, unhurried scene.

Cats explore the world largely through their noses, and freshly cut wood is full of new smells. Watching small objects fall and scatter also triggers their natural curiosity and hunting instincts. Still, a woodworking area calls for a little caution around pets. Sharp tools should be kept out of reach and never left lying open, and tiny wood chips or splinters are not something a cat should chew or swallow. Some woods, stains, and finishes can be irritating or harmful, so sweep up after a session and keep varnishes sealed away. A safe perch nearby lets a curious cat watch the work without getting underfoot.

Earl's carving is slowly taking shape, though it is still hard to tell what it will become. Pearl seems more interested in the leftovers than the masterpiece. Between the two of them, nothing on this porch goes to waste or goes unnoticed.
