Frank and Dottie Fell Asleep in Front of the TV. Bean Found the Oddest Spot to Join Them.

The television is still on in the background, but nobody is watching it anymore. Frank has nodded off in the big recliner, his head tipped back and his gray sweater rumpled, and Dottie has fallen asleep leaning against his shoulder, her glasses tucked into her cardigan and a cream knitted blanket pulled over her lap. And draped over the padded armrest like a sack of flour is Bean, the black pug, sound asleep with his paws dangling and his wrinkly face squished against the upholstery. A basket, a stack of books, and a few plants fill the cozy living room around them.

Pugs are true professional nappers, and many of them happily spend a large part of the day dozing near their people. They are also famous for snoring, which is linked to their short airways. Mild snoring is common in the breed, but very loud breathing, choking sounds, or trouble breathing during sleep are worth mentioning to your vet. Sleeping close to their family is natural for pugs, since they were bred as lap dogs and companions. For older owners, a calm dog that is happy to rest nearby can be a wonderful match, offering warmth and company without demanding long, strenuous walks.

Somewhere between the evening news and the next show, all three of them drifted off. It is not the most glamorous scene, but it might be the most peaceful one in the neighborhood tonight.
