Frank and Dottie Were Fixing the Old Fence. Bean Brought His Own Supplies.

A section of the old wooden fence needs patching, and Frank and Dottie have set up shop right outside the back door. Dottie, in a denim jacket with her glasses on, carefully taps a nail with a hammer, while Frank, in a plaid shirt and work gloves, grips a pair of pliers and concentrates hard. Tools spill from a canvas bag nearby, along with a bucket of nails, a cordless drill, and a watering can. Front and center sits Bean, holding a long stick crosswise in his mouth like he is handing over the next board. His big eyes look up as though he is waiting to be told where to put it.

Many dogs love carrying sticks, and it can make them feel like part of the action. That said, sticks can splinter and injure a dog's mouth or throat, so sturdy chew toys made for dogs are a safer option for regular play. Home repair areas carry other hazards too. Nails, screws, and small hardware are easy for a curious dog to pick up, and some paints, stains, and wood treatments are toxic. Keeping tools in a closed bag, sweeping up after a project, and giving your dog a safe toy and a comfortable spot nearby lets them stay close without getting hurt.

The fence will be standing straight again by suppertime. And if anyone asks who helped, Bean will be the first to volunteer his services, stick and all.
