Frank and Dottie Raised a Lemonade Toast on the Porch. Bean Wasn't in a Celebrating Mood.

Two tall glasses of lemonade, each with a slice of lemon, are raised in a little toast on the front porch. Dottie, in a blue chambray shirt and glasses, smiles warmly, and Frank, under a canvas bucket hat and wearing an olive shirt, grins back at her. The porch is shaded and peaceful, with hanging plants, potted pink flowers, and a brick pillar soaking up the afternoon. Bean, though, has not joined the toast. The black pug sits on the grass right in front of the steps, gazing off to the side with a serious, slightly grumpy face, wrinkles deep and eyes alert, as if guarding the yard is his full-time job.

Shady porches are perfect for pugs on warm days. Because their short muzzles make cooling down harder, pugs should spend hot afternoons in the shade with fresh water close by, and strenuous play is best saved for cooler hours. Lemons and lemonade, however, are not good for dogs. Citrus can upset a dog's stomach, and sugary drinks add calories they do not need. Plain, cool water in a clean bowl is all a pup needs to stay refreshed. Some dogs also enjoy a lick mat or a frozen treat made from dog-safe ingredients on a hot day, though it is wise to keep portions small.

Frank and Dottie are celebrating nothing in particular, which is often the best reason of all. Bean has the yard covered, the lemonade is cold, and the afternoon stretches out lazy and sweet.
