Grandpa Kenji Lay Down in the Grass for a Minute. Maple Curled Up Right There.

Low autumn sunlight slants across the backyard lawn, and two friends have surrendered to it completely. Grandpa Kenji lies in the grass with his eyes closed, a gray jacket bunched under his head and his glasses pushed up into his hair. Maple has curled right against him, her face nestled by his cheek, eyes shut, white paws tucked together in the clover. Garden beds, a wooden fence, and a few scattered leaves fill the background, all glowing in the late-afternoon light.

Lying in the sun is a favorite pastime for many dogs, and it's easy to see why: warm ground feels comforting and relaxing. For huskies, though, sunshine needs to be balanced with shade. Their thick double coat insulates against heat, but on warm days they can overheat more quickly than many breeds, so cool morning or late-day sunbathing, like this golden-hour nap, is the smart choice. Dogs with thin fur or light-colored noses can also get sunburned on exposed skin, so long midday sessions aren't ideal. If you lounge on the grass with your pet, check the lawn for fertilizers or pesticides first, and keep up with flea and tick prevention, since grassy areas are where those pests like to wait.

There's something deeply reassuring about a dog choosing to rest against you. Close contact like this is a sign of trust and affection, and it seems to calm both of them.

Neither one looks ready to move anytime soon. The sun will set when it sets, and until then, this patch of lawn is the best place in the world.
