Grandpa Kenji Leaned In Close on the Porch. Maple Brought Her Goofiest Grin.
Two faces, one frame, and two very different kinds of smile. Grandpa Kenji leans in close on the front porch steps, his gray hair neatly combed and his green sweater vest buttoned up, wearing a soft, proud grin. Maple sits tall beside him, her blue collar snug, her bright eyes catching the light, and her mouth open in a goofy, tongue-out husky smile. Pink flowers spill from a planter on the steps, and the screen door and porch rail behind them look like they've seen many years of comings and goings.
Those striking eyes are one of the breed's most famous features. Siberian Huskies can have blue eyes, brown eyes, or one of each, a trait called heterochromia, and some even have eyes that are part blue and part brown. Eye color doesn't affect a husky's vision or temperament. The red and white coat Maple wears is one of several accepted colors, along with black and white, gray and white, sable, and pure white. Huskies are generally friendly and outgoing, often greeting strangers with enthusiasm rather than suspicion, which is why they're known as charming companions but not very good guard dogs. Regular eye checks during vet visits are a good habit for any breed.
Moments like this one, sitting close and looking content, are what a long friendship between a person and a dog looks like. Nothing special is happening, and that's exactly the point.
If this ever ends up framed on the mantel, it will deserve a spot right in the middle. Grandpa Kenji clearly knows he has a very handsome sidekick.
