An older man in a sweater vest sleeps in a rope hammock under oak leaves with a cream Chihuahua curled up on his chest. 17 / 25

Grandpa Climbed Into the Hammock for Ten Minutes. He Ended Up With a Passenger.

A woven rope hammock sways gently between two trees, oak leaves shining yellow-green overhead. Henry has sunk deep into it, head tipped back, eyes shut, and mouth set in the easy line of real sleep. Draped right across his chest, on top of his knit sweater vest, is Peanut. She has made herself into a tidy little crescent, front paws folded, chin resting on his arm, and her eyes are drifting half closed. Behind them, the house, a few potted plants, a watering can, and a patio chair sit quietly in the late afternoon light.

Many Chihuahuas love to sleep on their person, and it makes sense. They are small dogs that get cold easily, and lying on someone's chest offers warmth, the comforting rhythm of breathing, and the closeness they crave. It is a sweet habit, but hammocks require a little caution. They can tip or swing suddenly, and a small dog who jumps or slides off can be hurt by the fall. Keep a hand on your dog when getting in and out, and avoid leaving a tiny dog in a hammock alone. A quick look for ticks after time outdoors under the trees is a smart habit too.

Henry came out for a short rest and got a living hot water bottle for free. Whoever wakes up first will probably decide the other one deserves five more minutes.
