Grandpa Brought His Fishing Rod to the Dock. The Fish Weren't What Held His Attention.
The fishing rod rests loosely in Henry's hand, its line trailing out over the dark water, but his attention has drifted. He is gazing down at Peanut with a soft, affectionate half-smile, glasses low on his nose, his green argyle sweater vest buttoned up against the morning chill. Peanut sits pressed right against his side on the weathered dock, her blue collar bright against her cream fur, her big ears relaxed as she gazes out with calm, dark eyes. Behind them, the old planks stretch toward a cluster of houses along the water.
A day at the dock can be relaxing for dogs too, as long as safety comes first. Fishing gear holds real hazards: hooks, lures, and lines can injure a curious dog, and bait or a hooked fish can be tempting to snatch. Keep tackle boxes closed and never leave baited lines unattended within reach. If your dog swallows a hook or line, do not pull on it. Get to your vet right away. Small dogs like Chihuahuas are also at risk near deep water, so a snug dog life jacket and a leash on the dock are wise choices. Shade and fresh water round out a good fishing trip.
The fish may or may not be biting today, but Henry does not seem to mind much. He has already caught the best part of the morning, and she is sitting right next to him.
