Grandma and Grandpa Lay Down on the Lawn for Five Minutes. The Cat Had Bigger Plans.

Somewhere in the middle of a sunny afternoon, everyone in this family gave up on staying awake. Edna and Frank lie on a soft blanket spread across the grass, heads tipped together, eyes closed, wrapped in their matching cream cable-knit sweaters. Edna's glasses have slid down her nose. Curled into the space between them is Duchess, a mound of white fluff with her paws tucked and her eyes squeezed nearly shut, the very picture of a contented cat. Behind them, a blue watering can, a pot of herbs, gardening gloves, and a pile of tools wait patiently for later.

Cats are champion nappers, often sleeping a large portion of the day, and they love a warm, sunny spot. Sunbathing helps them stay cozy without spending much energy. Outdoors, though, a few precautions matter. Cats with white or light-colored fur, like Duchess, can sunburn on thinly furred areas such as ear tips and the nose, so limit time in strong midday sun and offer shade. Make sure the lawn has not recently been treated with fertilizer or pesticides, which can be harmful if a cat grooms them off her coat. Supervision or a harness keeps an outdoor nap from turning into an escape.

The garden chores will still be there when they wake up, and nobody seems worried about it. On an afternoon this nice, a three-way nap on the lawn might be the most important item on the list.
