Grandma and Grandpa Spread Out Fifty Years of Photos. Duchess Noticed She Wasn't in Any.
Decades of memories are spread across the kitchen table: black-and-white snapshots of weddings, babies, and smiling faces in old-fashioned clothes, all in a big, overlapping mess. Edna studies one photo carefully, one hand resting on the pile, and Frank leans in with a picture held up near his glasses. Both are wearing their cream cable-knit sweaters, and both have stopped mid-sort, because Duchess has walked right into the middle of the table and settled her fluffy body directly on top of the photos. Her flat face wears a grumpy look, as if she cannot believe she is not in any of them.
Sorting old photos is a wonderful activity for older adults. Looking through pictures can spark memories, conversations, and stories worth passing down, and it is a gentle way to reconnect with the past. If you have a cat, though, protect irreplaceable prints. Cats love to sit on whatever you are paying attention to, partly to be close and partly because papers are warm and interesting. Their claws and fur can scratch or smudge delicate photos. Working in batches, scanning favorites, and offering your cat a cozy spot on a chair beside you can keep both memories and kitty happy.
Duchess may not appear in any of those old snapshots, but she has made sure she will be part of the family story going forward. Somebody should probably take her picture next.
