Grandma in glasses and a green vest hand-stitches a patchwork quilt while a grey Scottish Fold sleeps on the fabric pile. 10 / 27

Grandma Needed Just One More Square of Fabric. It Was Under the Cat.

Needle in hand and glasses low on her nose, Ruth is deep into the slow, satisfying work of hand-stitching a patchwork quilt. Blue plaids, faded florals, and soft checks spill across her lap and over the arms of her chair, while stacks of folded fabric rise beside her. Right in the center of it all, curled into a perfect grey crescent, Pebble is fast asleep. His folded ears are pressed flat, his eyes are squeezed shut, and his tail wraps neatly around his body. A basket of yarn, a box of tissues, and a forgotten cup of tea sit on the side table, and a houseplant catches the window light.

Cats are famous for choosing the exact spot you are using, and fabric piles are a favorite for good reasons. Cotton and wool hold warmth, the folds make a soft nest, and the fabric smells like their favorite person. Cats also sleep a great deal, often well over half the day, so a cozy, quiet spot near their owner is hard to resist. Sewing areas do carry a few hazards, though. Needles, pins, and especially loose thread can be dangerous if swallowed, so it's wise to tuck them into a closed box or pincushion whenever you step away.

Ruth will just have to stitch around her sleeping helper for a while. Somehow, a quilt that has had a cat napping in it always seems a little warmer once it is finished.
