Grandma Sat Down at the Old Piano and Had an Audience of One
The old upright piano has seen better days, with a few chipped keys and a music stand cluttered with papers, but Ruth still knows every tune by heart. She sits at the bench in her green quilted vest, fingers moving gently over the keys, her eyes lowered toward the music. Beside her on the same worn bench, Pebble sits upright with his paws together, gazing up at her face with rapt attention. His folded ears give him a permanently attentive look, as though he is hearing each note with care. Baskets of yarn and stacks of folded blankets fill the cozy room around them.
Do cats actually enjoy music? Many seem fairly indifferent to typical human songs, but they often respond to soft, calm sounds and dislike loud, sudden noise. Gentle background music is sometimes used to help cats relax in stressful settings, and some owners notice their cats settling near the piano or speaker during quiet pieces. Since cats have sensitive hearing, it's a good idea to keep volume moderate and give them a way to leave the room if they want to. What a cat probably enjoys most here is simply being close to their person, with the soft vibration of the instrument nearby.
Pebble may not be able to name the song, but he has the best seat in the house and the most devoted expression in the audience. Ruth couldn't ask for a better listener.
