Harold and Bev Were Whittling on the Porch. Duchess Was Collecting Souvenirs.

AI imageragdollwhittlingporch

Curls of pale wood have piled up across the porch boards like the first snowfall of the season. Harold and Bev sit side by side on the old bench in their matching cream sweaters, each carefully carving a small piece of wood, heads bent in quiet concentration. The porch light glows softly behind them as evening comes on. Closest to us sits Duchess, the seal point Ragdoll, her thick cream ruff fluffed out, her dark ears pricked, and one brilliant blue eye fixed on the falling shavings. A few curls of wood have even landed in her fur, which she hasn't noticed or simply doesn't mind.

Hand hobbies like whittling, knitting, and woodworking can be wonderful for older adults, keeping the hands nimble and the mind focused, and they make for peaceful shared time. With pets nearby, though, a few precautions matter. Sharp knives should never be left within reach, and it's best to keep curious animals a short distance away while you carve. Most plain wood shavings aren't a big danger, but chewing splinters can injure a cat's mouth, and some treated or finished woods, stains, and varnishes can be harmful. Sweeping up after each session keeps the porch safe for paws.

Duchess may not be carving anything, but she is clearly the supervisor of this workshop. Harold and Bev would probably say she's the best-dressed member of the crew, too.
