Dot Rolled Out Her Yoga Mat. Moose Had His Own Idea of a Pose.
The living room furniture has been pushed back, a sage-green yoga mat is rolled out across the wood floor, and Dot is easing into her morning stretches with her palms pressed flat in front of her. She's in black leggings, a cream top, and her olive quilted vest, white hair twisted into a loose bun. Moose has joined in, sort of. The black Lab is sprawled across the end of the mat in a perfect sphinx pose, front legs stretched long, tongue peeking out in a relaxed grin. A rope toy and a ball lie near the couch, and plants and a laundry basket fill the sunny room.
Gentle stretching and low-impact exercise can help older adults stay flexible and steady on their feet, and many people find a pet makes a routine more fun. If you're starting a new exercise habit, it's a good idea to check with your doctor first. Dogs benefit from movement too. Labs are an active breed that generally needs daily exercise, such as brisk walks, fetch, or swimming, to stay fit and content. As they age, many Labs do well with gentler, more frequent activity that's easy on the joints. Keeping a dog lean is one of the best things you can do for their long-term mobility.
Moose's form may need some work, but his enthusiasm for lying down is unmatched. Dot will likely finish her routine with a good belly rub as the cool-down.
