Dot Sat Down With Her Sandwich. Moose Had Been Practicing His Face.

Lunch on the old green garden bench is one of Dot's favorite small pleasures, but she rarely eats it alone. Today she's wearing a navy quilted vest over a grey shirt, glasses perched low, and she's holding half a sandwich at an angle that is suspiciously within reach. Moose, her black Labrador Retriever, has stretched his neck up to meet it, nose quivering, mouth gently open, his soft brown eyes fixed on the bread. Dot is smiling down at him with obvious affection, clearly about to give in. Around them, potted plants, a coiled green hose, and fallen leaves fill the backyard.

Labradors are well known for their love of food, and some research has even linked a gene variation in many Labs to increased appetite. That makes them wonderful to train with treats, but it also means they're prone to weight gain. Extra pounds put strain on the joints, and Labs can already be prone to hip and elbow problems. Sharing a bite of plain bread or meat now and then is usually fine, but many sandwich ingredients aren't dog-friendly. Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and some processed meats can be harmful, so it's best to share only plain, safe bits and keep portions tiny.

Moose will likely get his small taste, and Dot will finish the rest. For a dog like him, a few crumbs and his favorite person on a sunny bench is about as good as lunch gets.
