Grandma in a green quilted vest sprays an old grey car with a hose as a black Labrador jumps up to bite the water. 1 / 22

Dot Only Wanted to Wash the Old Car. Moose Saw the Hose.

The old grey sedan was supposed to get a simple wash in the driveway. Instead, Dot is laughing as a jet of water arcs off the hood and straight into the open mouth of Moose, her black Labrador Retriever. He's up on his hind legs, front paws in the air, jaws wide, trying to catch every drop as it splashes past. His glossy coat is soaked and shining, and water drips from his ears. Dot, in her olive quilted vest and flannel shirt, glasses perched on her nose, can't stop grinning. A blue bucket of suds sits at her feet, and the late afternoon sun glows behind the garage.

Labs are famous for loving water, and it's part of their history. The breed was developed to retrieve for fishermen and hunters, and they have a dense, water-resistant double coat and a thick, otter-like tail that helps them swim. Playing with a hose is great summer fun and good exercise, but keep a few things in mind. Car-wash soaps and chemicals shouldn't be swallowed, so rinse your dog and keep the bucket out of reach. Hoses left in the sun can spray very hot water at first, so test it before aiming it at a pet. And after lots of water play, dry the ears well, since floppy-eared dogs like Labs can be prone to ear infections.

The car may not be much cleaner by the end, but Moose certainly will be. Dot seems to think that's a fair trade.
