Grandpa Earl Was Hanging Clean Sheets on the Line. Something Moved Behind Them.
Laundry day is in full swing, and it has turned into an obstacle course. Earl stands in a bright room strung with an indoor clothesline, carefully pinning up a white sheet with wooden clothespins. Shirts, towels, and pillowcases hang in a row beside him, and a wicker basket overflowing with more clothes waits at his feet. Just as he clips the next corner, Duchess comes bursting out from between the sheets, mid-leap, paws stretched forward and long white fur flying. Her copper eyes are wide with mischief, and her tail streams out behind her like a flag.
Cats love to dart through hanging fabric, hide in laundry baskets, and pounce on moving cloth. To them, it is a perfect mix of cover and movement, which taps right into their hunting instincts. This kind of play is great exercise, but laundry areas hold a few hidden hazards. Keep detergent pods, fabric softeners, and bleach well out of reach, since they can be very harmful if chewed or licked. Always check washers and dryers before closing the door or starting a cycle, because cats sometimes crawl inside warm machines to nap. Loose clothespins can also be chewed, so keep the bag closed.
Earl's laundry may need a second round of smoothing out, but it is hard to stay annoyed at a cat having this much fun. With Duchess around, even the dullest chores come with a little entertainment.
