Grandpa Earl Set Out Two Lawn Chairs for the Sunset. Only One Got Used.
The sun is sinking low behind the old shed, painting the sky orange and gold. Earl has set out two green folding lawn chairs in the backyard, one for himself and one, presumably, for his companion. But Duchess has other plans. She has skipped her own chair entirely and settled right into Earl's lap, her thick white fur glowing in the last light and her flat face turned toward the sunset with a calm, serious stare. Earl, glasses on and plaid shirt under his overalls, gazes off into the distance with a quiet smile. Garden pots, a hose, and stacked firewood fill the yard around them.
Cats often prefer a warm lap over any chair or bed, no matter how nice. Laps offer warmth, security, and closeness to their favorite person, all things cats value. Evening is also a naturally active and social time for many cats, since they tend to be most alert around dawn and dusk. If you enjoy spending evenings outdoors with your cat, keep them on a harness or in a secure area, as dusk is when wildlife like raccoons and coyotes may be on the move. Mosquitoes and fleas can be active too, so ask your vet about appropriate parasite prevention for cats who spend time outside.
One chair sits empty, but nobody seems to mind. Earl has a warm cat in his lap, a glowing sky ahead, and a quiet evening that feels just right.
