Every Night Grandpa Ken Does One Last Thing Before He Turns Off the Lights
Golden late-day light fills the living room as Grandpa Ken bends over a round gray dog bed. With careful hands, he folds a soft cream blanket up around Rocco's shoulders and smooths it under his chin. The brindle Boxer lies curled in the bed with droopy eyelids and a deeply wrinkled forehead, looking utterly content and halfway to sleep. A couch with plump pillows, a houseplant by the window, a basket, and a couple of chew toys on the floor complete the cozy scene.
Boxers are famously energetic, but they also need a lot of rest, especially as they grow older. A supportive bed with raised edges gives a dog something to rest his head on, and a soft blanket can add warmth for a short-coated breed that tends to feel the cold. Placing the bed in a quiet corner away from drafts, and keeping a regular bedtime routine, helps many dogs settle more easily. Senior dogs may benefit from orthopedic beds with thicker foam that eases pressure on joints. If a dog suddenly seems restless at night or has trouble getting comfortable, it is worth checking in with your vet.
Rocco has had a full day of supervising, snacking, and following Ken around the house. Now he has earned a long, uninterrupted nap, and he is going to take it seriously.
