Grandpa Ken Took Rocco to the Boardwalk. The Ocean Wasn't What He Was Looking At.
The boardwalk is nearly empty at this hour, and the sun is spreading a soft pink glow across the sand and the sea. Grandpa Ken sits on a weathered wooden bench in a navy sweater vest and khakis, smiling quietly. Rocco sits pressed against his side, mouth open in a relaxed pant and gaze turned up toward Ken. A lifeguard tower stands in the distance, driftwood lies along the dunes, and a wooden rail separates the walkway from the beach.
Beach outings can be a treat for dogs, but a little preparation keeps them safe and fun. Sand and boardwalk planks can get very hot in the middle of the day, so early morning or evening visits are kinder to paws. Bring fresh water, since dogs should not drink salt water, which can make them sick. Boxers have short muzzles and do not handle heat as well as many breeds, so watch for heavy panting and seek shade often. After the visit, rinse off salt and sand to keep the coat and skin comfortable. Always check local rules, since many beaches and boardwalks have seasonal leash requirements or restrictions for dogs.
For Rocco, the ocean is nice, but the real reason he is smiling is sitting right next to him. Ken seems to feel exactly the same way, and neither of them is in any hurry to head home.
