An elderly couple in cream sweaters nap in a rope hammock between two trees with a large fawn Great Dane lying across them. 18 / 30

The Hammock Was Built for Two. Harold and Bev Forgot to Tell Duke.

Strung between two sturdy tree trunks, the rope hammock sags low under its very full load. Harold and Bev have drifted off side by side in their cream cable-knit sweaters, eyes closed and faces relaxed, Bev's head resting against Harold's shoulder. Somehow Duke has climbed in too. The fawn Great Dane is sprawled across their legs, his enormous body taking up most of the hammock, head raised just enough to gaze sleepily toward the yard. Leaves flutter overhead, and potted flowers and a blue watering can sit on the deck by the house.

Hammocks and dogs can be a fun combination, but a giant breed adds a lot of weight and movement. If your dog likes to join you, make sure the hammock and its supports are rated for the combined load, and help him in and out gently so he does not leap and tip everyone over. Jumping onto unstable surfaces can be hard on a large dog's joints, so a low, sturdy option or a dog bed placed right beside the hammock is often a better choice. Keep naps in the shade on warm days, and have water nearby for everyone, especially dogs with heavy builds who can overheat.

Nobody in this hammock looks the least bit worried. It may be a little crowded, but for Harold, Bev, and Duke, the best naps are the ones they take together.
