Eight Hungry Ducks, One Handful of Feed, and a Husky Standing Inches Away
A little flotilla of mallards has paddled up to the muddy edge of the pond, the green-headed drakes and speckled brown hens all jostling for position. Grandpa Hank crouches down on the bank in his plaid shirt and overalls, grinning as he lets a handful of feed trickle from his palm. Copper stands right at his shoulder, leaning in to sniff Hank's hand with great interest, though his eyes keep sliding toward the ducks. The grass is sprinkled with fallen leaves, and an old fence and garden shed sit at the back of the yard.
If you enjoy feeding ducks, what you offer matters. Bread is a common habit, but it offers little nutrition for waterfowl and leftovers can foul the water. Better options often suggested include cracked corn, oats, birdseed, or chopped greens like lettuce, offered in small amounts. With a dog along, keep the leash handy. Huskies have a strong prey drive, and a sudden flap of wings can trigger a chase. Pond water can also contain bacteria or algae that are not safe for dogs to drink, so bring fresh water and discourage drinking from still ponds.
Copper is showing impressive manners in this scene. All that excitement is packed into a single, polite sniff.
The ducks get their snack, Hank gets his front-row seat, and Copper gets to stand very close to the most fascinating creatures he has seen all week.
