Five Sparrows Landed Inches From Grandpa Ken's Hand. Mochi's Reaction Was Perfect.
A wooden tray brimming with mixed seed has drawn a small crowd of sparrows, and several are perched right on its edge, pecking busily just inches from Grandpa Ken's hand. Ken, wearing a brown argyle sweater over a blue collared shirt, holds a pinch of seed between his fingers and watches the birds with a gentle, patient smile. Mochi sits a little way off on the grass, upright and still, her fluffy cream coat glowing softly in the gray winter light. She watches with her head tilted, clearly curious but on her very best behavior. A hanging birdhouse feeder, a wooden fence, and potted plants complete the quiet backyard scene.
Havanese are generally gentle, sociable dogs with a moderate prey drive, which is part of why they often do well in homes with other pets. Still, every dog is an individual, and fluttering birds can spark excitement in any pup. Practicing calm commands like sit and stay in different settings helps a dog stay relaxed around wildlife. It is also wise to tidy up spilled seed and hulls under feeders, since dogs may snack on them and moldy seed can upset a stomach. Placing feeders near cover gives birds a quick escape route and keeps them coming back.
Mochi's stillness makes this moment possible. The sparrows seem to have decided she is no threat at all.
A handful of seed, a patient little dog, and a yard full of birdsong. Winter mornings do not get much sweeter.
