Grandma Sat Down With the Morning Paper. Cotton Didn't Make It Past Page One.

Morning light fills the living room, and Grandma Loretta has settled into her favorite armchair with the newspaper, a green knit throw draped over her knees and her glasses pushed up on top of her head. She's reading with a calm, focused expression, one hand resting lightly on the page. Curled across her lap and the knit throw, Cotton has completely given up on staying awake. His fluffy white head rests on her knee, his eyes are closed, and his body is sunk into the blanket in total relaxation. A basket of yarn balls, a potted plant and a cluttered side table complete the cozy scene.

Bichon Frises are companion dogs through and through, and many are happiest napping right on or beside their favorite person. Adult dogs often sleep somewhere around twelve to fourteen hours a day, so a long lap nap is perfectly normal. For older adults, a small, affectionate dog can be wonderful company during quiet routines like reading the paper, and the steady warmth of a sleeping pet is something many people find comforting. Lap dogs still need daily walks and play, though, both for fitness and to keep their weight in check. Gentle brushing during lap time is also a nice way to keep up with a Bichon's coat.

The headlines can wait a moment. With Cotton snoozing on her knee, Loretta's quiet morning is about as peaceful as it gets.
