Grandma Brought Her Sandwich Out to the Garden Bench. Cotton Brought the Stare.

Lunch is served on the old wooden bench in the garden, and Grandma Loretta has a thick sandwich in hand, stuffed with lettuce and deli meat. She's wearing her sage-green cardigan, glasses perched on top of her head, and a small, knowing smile. That smile is aimed at Cotton, who has planted himself directly in front of her, fluffy white face filling the foreground. He isn't looking at her, though. He's gazing sideways at that sandwich with the most soulful, serious brown eyes, his blue collar peeking from his curls. Potted plants, a weathered fence and a few fallen leaves fill the garden behind them.

Sandwiches are tempting, but many common fillings aren't dog-friendly. Deli meats are often high in salt and fat and may contain garlic or onion seasonings, which are toxic to dogs. Cheese and mayo are rich and can cause stomach upset, and some breads contain raisins or the sweetener xylitol, both dangerous for dogs. A tiny piece of plain, unseasoned cooked chicken or turkey is a safer way to share. Bichons are prone to weight gain and can have sensitive stomachs, so treats should stay small. If your dog eats something risky, talk to your vet.

Cotton's stare is strong, but Loretta has seen it before. Whether he gets a nibble or a pat on the head instead, lunch on the garden bench is always better with him nearby.
