Rose Just Wanted to Dip Her Toes in the Lake. Yeti Went All the Way In.

Rose dangles her bare feet off the end of a sun-bleached wooden dock, toes in the cool lake, and she isn't the only one getting wet. She sits in a cream knit cardigan over a blue top and black leggings, hair pinned up, smiling as she leans toward her companion. Yeti stands chest-deep in the shallow water right beside her, his white coat damp at the edges, mouth open in a happy grin as he nudges his nose toward her. Reeds sway along the shore, tall pines shade the far bank, and the bright afternoon sun sparkles across the lake.

Plenty of Samoyeds enjoy a splash, but water outings come with a few precautions. Not every dog is a confident swimmer, so let your dog enter at his own pace, and consider a dog life jacket for deeper water or boating. Lakes can contain hazards like strong currents near outlets, sharp rocks, fishing hooks, and blue-green algae. That algae can be extremely toxic, so avoid water that looks discolored, foamy, or scummy, and don't let your dog drink from it. Rinse him with fresh water afterward to remove any residue. A Samoyed's heavy double coat absorbs a lot of water and dries slowly, so towel him thoroughly and make sure the undercoat dries completely to avoid skin irritation. Check ears too, since moisture trapped inside can lead to ear problems, and ask your vet if you notice scratching or odor.

Rose came for a quiet soak, and Yeti came for an adventure. Somehow, at the end of the dock, they meet perfectly in the middle.
