Rose Poured a Tall Glass of Lemonade. A Fluffy Nose Got There First.

Lemon slices bob in a tall glass, and Yeti has leaned in for a closer look. Rose sits under the shade of her wooden pergola in a chunky knit cardigan and olive shirt, reading glasses perched on her nose, holding the lemonade just in front of her dog with a gentle, amused smile. Yeti's nose is nearly touching the glass, his mouth open in a happy pant and his white coat fluffed out around his face. A lattice wall twined with greenery, a hanging basket, potted plants, a watering can, and a bicycle by the fence fill out the peaceful backyard.

Warm afternoons are when dogs need extra attention to hydration and cooling. Samoyeds have a very insulating double coat, so they can overheat more easily than short-coated dogs. Make sure your dog always has access to shade and fresh, cool water, and plan walks for the cooler parts of the day. Signs of overheating include heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, weakness, or stumbling, and any of those warrant moving your dog somewhere cool and calling your vet right away. As for lemonade, it's best not to share. Citrus can upset a dog's stomach, sugar provides no benefit, and some drink mixes or sugar-free versions contain xylitol, which is very dangerous for dogs. A bowl of cool water, or even a few ice cubes to lick, is the safer refreshment.

Rose gets the lemonade, Yeti gets the water bowl, and both of them get the shade. It's a simple, perfect porch afternoon.
