Rose Went to the Farmers Market for Squash. Yeti Went to Meet Everyone.
Crates of pumpkins, squash, and bright produce line the path, and the late-afternoon sun gives everything a warm glow. Rose strolls through the farmers market in a long oatmeal cardigan over an olive top, leash looped in her hand, smiling down at the dog beside her. Yeti trots along with his fluffy tail curled high, mouth open in a huge grin, looking for all the world like the market's unofficial greeter. Canvas canopies shade the stalls, buckets of flowers and potted plants crowd the edges, and other shoppers browse the vegetable tables in the background.
Markets can be great outings for social dogs, but they're also full of distractions, so preparation helps. Make sure your dog walks well on a leash and is comfortable with crowds, strollers, and other animals before attempting a busy market. Check the market's rules first, since some don't allow pets. A standard leash gives more control than a retractable one in tight spaces. Watch the ground for dropped food, which might include onions, grapes, or corn cobs, all of which can be problematic for dogs. Bring water, especially on warm days, as a Samoyed's thick coat makes overheating a real concern, and take breaks in the shade. Not every shopper is comfortable around dogs, so keep your dog close and ask before letting him greet people. If he seems overwhelmed, it's perfectly fine to head home early.
Rose comes home with fresh vegetables, and Yeti comes home with a dozen new admirers. It's a productive trip for both of them.
