Abuela Rosa Held Her Calico Up to Show Her the Snow. Canela Looked Elsewhere.

The snow came overnight, and Abuela Rosa could not wait to share it. She has pushed aside her knitting, left her glasses on the desk beside a half-finished cup of tea, and scooped Canela up to the frosty window. The fluffy calico is held high against Rosa's green sweater, paws resting on her hands, but instead of the snowy yard, she is gazing straight into Rosa's face. Outside, white drifts cover the shrubs and fence, while inside, a lamp glows warm over shelves of yarn and an embroidered picture on the wall.

Window watching is one of the best free entertainments for an indoor cat, and many cat lovers call it cat TV. Birds, falling leaves, and swirling snowflakes all trigger a cat's natural curiosity and hunting instincts, which helps keep indoor cats mentally engaged. A sturdy window perch or a cleared sill lets a cat enjoy the view without needing to be held. In winter, check that the spot is not too drafty, since older or short-haired cats can get chilled near cold glass. Picking a cat up should always feel secure to them, with one hand supporting the chest and the other under the back legs. Cats that feel their hindquarters dangling often wriggle to get down, while a well-supported cat is much more likely to settle and enjoy the moment.

Maybe Canela will notice the snow eventually. For now, her favorite view seems to be the person holding her up to see it.
