Abuela Rosa Went Shopping for Tomatoes. She Didn't Bring a Tote Bag.

Most people bring a tote bag to the farmers market. Abuela Rosa brings a calico. She stands in the dappled morning light between wooden stalls piled with tomatoes, avocados, cucumbers, and leafy greens, cradling Canela against her blue flowered apron. Rosa wears the soft, satisfied smile of someone who already knows which vendor has the best peppers. Canela, meanwhile, is taking in the whole scene with ears forward and eyes wide, clearly interested in the smells drifting from every crate.

Taking a cat on outings is a very different project from taking a dog. Most cats are happiest in familiar territory, and busy places with crowds, strange noises, and other animals can be stressful. A few laid-back cats do enjoy adventures, but they usually get there through slow, patient practice: getting used to a harness indoors first, then short quiet trips, always with a secure carrier nearby as a safe retreat. Even a calm cat can bolt if startled, so holding a cat in your arms in a public place is risky without a harness and leash attached. Watch for signs of stress such as flattened ears, a low crouch, or a lashing tail, and head home if they appear. For many cats, the best part of market day is sniffing the bags once they come through the door.

Canela seems to be enjoying the outing just fine, though. Fresh vegetables, warm arms, and a whole new world of smells make for a very good morning.
