The Walk Was Longer Than Planned, and Only One of Them Walked Home

The walk was a long one, and someone's legs gave out first. Earl climbs the weathered wooden porch steps with Pearl scooped up in his arms, holding her close against his overalls with one strong hand under her body. Her white coat is a little scruffy and windblown from the outing, her front legs dangle comfortably, and she peers out with bright black eyes and a satisfied little grin, clearly happy to be chauffeured home. A metal watering can, a pair of gloves, and some fallen leaves sit near the steps, and the yard behind them is green and a bit wild.

Knowing when your dog has had enough exercise is an important part of keeping them healthy. Signs that a dog is getting tired include lagging behind, lying down during a walk, heavy panting, or simply refusing to move. Older dogs, very young puppies, and dogs carrying extra weight often need shorter, gentler walks. Pavement temperature matters as well, since hot asphalt can burn paws. When lifting a dog, support both the chest and the hindquarters rather than picking them up by the front legs, which can strain the shoulders. People should lift with their legs and keep the dog close to the body to protect their own backs. If your dog suddenly tires much more easily than usual, talk to your vet.

Pearl got her adventure and a free ride home, which might be the best deal in the neighborhood. Earl does not seem to mind carrying her one bit.
