Dottie Opened the Morning Paper. By Page Two, Teddy Had Made His Move.
The newspaper is folded open to the inside pages, and Dottie is reading with a small, amused smile, as if she just found a story worth sharing. She sits comfortably on the couch in her open-knit cream cardigan, surrounded by soft blankets and pillows. Teddy has fallen fast asleep across her lap, his head resting on her knee and his eyes closed tight, completely unbothered by the rustle of the pages above him. A mug and a few books sit on a side table, a potted plant soaks up the soft window light, and framed pictures dot the walls of the bright, calm room.
Lap time is what Shih Tzus were made for. The breed was developed as a companion dog, and many love nothing more than settling in with their person for a long, quiet rest. For older adults, a warm little dog in the lap can be soothing, and the simple routine of reading the paper with a pet nearby can make the morning feel peaceful and familiar. If your dog spends a lot of time on your lap, it is still important to make sure they get regular short walks and play, since small dogs can gain weight easily when they are not active. Gentle daily exercise keeps joints, muscles, and moods in good shape.
Whatever the headlines say today, the most important news in this house is that Teddy is comfortable. Dottie seems happy to read every page without moving an inch.
