Grandma Got to Work Fixing the Old Fence. Her Helpers Showed Up With Supplies.

The old wooden fence has a few loose boards, and Dottie is down on the ground fixing them, glasses on and cardigan sleeves bunched up, carefully working a screw into a plank with her weathered hands. Scattered around her are boards, nails, and a few tools. She has a crew today. Teddy sits right in front, fluffy and serious, gazing up with soft brown eyes as if waiting to be assigned a task. Just behind him, a tan, shepherd-type dog has arrived with a long stick clamped proudly in his mouth, ready to contribute building materials whether they are needed or not. Watering cans, flowerpots, and a cluttered patio fill the yard behind them.

Many households have more than one dog, and pairing a small breed with a larger one can work well when both are introduced gently and play is supervised. Bigger dogs can accidentally knock over or step on a small companion, so watching their play and giving each dog its own space is wise. Repair projects also bring hazards. Nails, screws, and splintered wood are easy for curious dogs to step on or pick up, and some wood treatments and paints are not safe if licked. Keeping a tray for hardware and sweeping the area when you finish helps. Sticks can splinter in the mouth or throat, so many owners prefer sturdy chew toys over real sticks for play.

The fence will get fixed, eventually. With one dog offering moral support and another bringing lumber, Dottie is not short on help.
