Dottie Turned On the Hose to Wash the Car. Teddy Thought It Was for Him.
Car wash day has turned into splash day in the driveway. Dottie stands beside her old green sedan with the garden hose in hand, sleeves pushed up on her cardigan, laughing as she sends a spray of water across the door. Suds drip down the side of the car and puddles shine on the concrete. Teddy is right in the thick of it, bounding through the spray with his front paws lifted, mouth open, and fur damp and sticking up in all directions. A bucket of soapy water sits on the ground nearby, the hose snakes across the driveway, and a garage door and fence frame the scene.
Plenty of dogs love chasing water from a hose, and on a warm day it can be a fun way to cool off. Still, a few precautions help. Car wash soaps, waxes, and cleaners are not meant for pets, so it is best to keep dogs away from buckets and avoid letting them lick soapy puddles or wet car surfaces. Dogs can also swallow a lot of water when they bite at a hose spray, and drinking too much water very quickly can be dangerous, so keep play sessions short and the water pressure gentle. Shih Tzus have long coats that hold moisture, so a good towel-off and brush afterward help prevent tangles and skin irritation.
The car might be cleaner, but the real winner of wash day is a soggy, very happy Shih Tzu. Dottie clearly would not have it any other way.
