Two Lawn Chairs Were Set Out for the Sunset, but Only One Got Used
The sun is slipping down behind the rooftops, leaving a band of orange and pink glowing low on the horizon. Dottie sits in a blue folding lawn chair in the backyard, her silver hair tucked behind her ear and her cream cardigan pulled snug, gazing calmly toward the fading light. Teddy is curled in her lap on a soft knit blanket, sitting up just enough to look out at the evening with her, his ears soft and his expression thoughtful. A second blue chair sits empty beside them, and the yard is scattered with flowerpots, garden tools, toys, and the everyday bits and pieces of a well-lived summer.
Ending the day outdoors with a pet is a simple ritual that many people find calming. Evening is often a pleasant time for short-nosed breeds like Shih Tzus to be outside, since the air is cooler than at midday. A few things are worth remembering at dusk, though. Mosquitoes are often most active around this time, and they can carry heartworm, which affects dogs, so year-round prevention recommended by your vet is important. Small dogs can also catch a chill once the sun goes down, which makes a lap and a blanket a perfect spot. A yard cluttered with tools and small objects is worth a quick tidy before letting a curious pup roam.
Dottie and Teddy are in no hurry to go inside. Two lawn chairs, one warm dog, and a sky full of color make for a pretty perfect end to the day.
