After a Long Walk, Cocoa Needed a Little Help Up the Porch Steps

Back from a long walk, the three of them have paused on the porch steps, and Cocoa is clearly the star of the moment. Her thick chocolate curls are tousled and a little damp, her tongue lolls out in a big satisfied grin, and her eyes are bright with leftover excitement. Frank and Marion crouch close behind her in their matching cream cable-knit sweaters, their arms wrapped around her as they get ready to help her up the last few steps. Marion's glasses sit low on her nose and Frank is smiling gently. A pair of rubber boots, a coil of rope, a watering can, and flowerpots crowd the porch around them.

After a good walk, a quick post-walk routine keeps a Poodle comfortable and the house cleaner. Their tight, curly coat can collect burrs, twigs, and mud, so a once-over with a brush or comb helps catch debris before it turns into mats. Wiping paws removes dirt, de-icing salt, or lawn chemicals that a dog might otherwise lick off. It is also a good moment to check between the toes and around the ears for ticks or scratches. Standard Poodles are athletic dogs that generally enjoy long walks, but older dogs may tire sooner and appreciate help on steps. When lifting a large dog, two people supporting the chest and hindquarters is safer for everyone.

Cocoa looks thoroughly pleased with the whole adventure, and Frank and Marion look just as happy to have her home. Some walks end with a hug, and those are the best kind.
