Abuela Rosa Started Baking Cookies. Her Kitchen Suddenly Had Two Supervisors.

Baking day in Abuela Rosa's kitchen means flour on everything. A big bowl of it sits on the counter next to a measuring glass, a dish of cracked eggs, and a tray of round cookies ready for the oven. Rosa, in a cozy grey sweater and pink-flowered apron, is pressing a crumbly piece of dough into shape with focused care. She has two very interested assistants. Chispa sits up on the counter beside the tray, wrinkled grey ears tilted forward, eyes fixed on the dough. In the foreground, an orange tabby with white whiskers peeks over the edge of the counter, gazing upward as if waiting for a sample to fall.

Raw cookie dough is one treat to keep entirely away from cats. Uncooked eggs can carry bacteria, and raw dough containing yeast can be dangerous because it can expand and ferment in the stomach. Butter, sugar, and chocolate chips aren't good for cats either, and chocolate in particular is toxic to them. Flour itself isn't poisonous, but a cat that gets coated in it may lick off more than is wise, and a bare-skinned Sphynx can end up with an itchy dusting. Giving cats a perch just out of reach, with their own treat, keeps baking day safe and fun.

Neither cat seems likely to leave before the first batch comes out of the oven. In this kitchen, baking is clearly a team activity, whether Rosa asked for help or not.
