Grandpa Sat Down With the Morning Paper. Moose Thought He Was a Lap Dog.

Walt only wanted to read the headlines. Now he is pinned to the couch by a very sleepy Bernese who has decided that his lap is the only acceptable bed in the house. Moose lies sprawled across both of Walt's legs, one white paw tucked under his chin, eyes drowsy and content. Walt holds the newspaper off to one side, peering down at it over his dog's fluffy back, his overalls dusted with fur. A cream knit blanket covers the couch, and a green mug and a few houseplants sit on the table behind them.

Many large dogs never seem to realize how big they are, and Bernese Mountain Dogs are famous for trying to be lap dogs anyway. This habit is usually a sign of affection and a wish to be close. Owners who enjoy it can simply put down a washable throw to manage the shedding, since Bernese coats leave a generous amount of fur behind, especially during seasonal changes. Regular brushing, a few times a week or more in shedding season, helps keep the fur on the dog instead of on the couch. For older owners, a heavy dog on the legs can be comforting, but it is fine to gently redirect a dog to a bed nearby if it becomes uncomfortable.

Walt doesn't seem to mind one bit. The news can wait, and the crossword can wait. A warm dog on a quiet morning is reason enough to stay put.
