Grandpa Finally Got the Leaves Into One Neat Pile. Then Peanut Took Off.
All four paws are off the ground. Peanut has launched herself toward the leaf pile with her ears flying and her front legs stretched out like a tiny superhero, and Earl can't stop grinning. He holds the rake mid-stroke in his plaid shirt and overalls, glasses pushed up on his head, watching his little Yorkie scatter the leaves he just gathered. Orange and brown leaves blanket the lawn, pots of mums brighten the porch steps, and a tall fence and golden trees frame the yard.
Fall is a fun season for dogs, and even tiny breeds like Yorkies can be surprisingly bold and athletic. Their terrier spirit makes them quick, curious, and fearless about jumping into things. Still, leaf piles can hide sticks, sharp debris, mushrooms, or damp mold, and a small dog can swallow something it should not. Ticks also like moist leaf litter, so a quick check of the coat afterward is smart, especially around the ears and legs. Mums, which appear on many porches in autumn, can cause stomach upset if a dog chews them, so it is best to keep pots out of nibbling range.
Earl will have to rake that pile again, maybe more than once. That seems to be fine with him. A few extra minutes of work is a small price for a moment like this, with Peanut flying through the air and the whole yard glowing in autumn color.
