Grandpa Poured One Glass of Lemonade. Peanut Had Her Eye on Something Else.
A tall glass of lemonade, a striped straw, and a little shade. Earl sits on the edge of the wooden porch in his overalls and olive work shirt, taking a slow sip while gazing down thoughtfully. Peanut sits right between his knees, her scruffy blue and tan coat fluffed out, ears tipped up, and her eyes fixed on something far off in the yard. Potted plants line the porch posts, a garden hose snakes through the grass, and the backyard stretches out green and quiet behind them.
Warm afternoons call for staying hydrated, and that goes for small dogs as much as people. Yorkies are tiny, and tiny bodies can overheat or dehydrate faster than you might expect, so a fresh bowl of water in a shady spot is a must on warm days. Lemonade itself is not a good drink for dogs. Citrus can upset a dog's stomach, and the sugar is unnecessary, while some sugar-free drinks contain xylitol, which is dangerous to dogs. Cool water, a shaded resting spot, and avoiding the hottest part of the day for walks are the simplest ways to keep a small dog comfortable through summer.
Earl has his lemonade and Peanut has her lookout post. Whatever caught her eye out there will probably turn out to be a squirrel. For now, though, the two of them are perfectly content just sitting in the shade together.
