Abuela Spent All Morning Choosing Quilt Squares. Chispa Picked Her Own Pile.
Needle in hand and glasses low on her nose, Abuela Rosa is deep in the rhythm of hand quilting. Squares of rose, mustard, denim blue and faded plaid spread across her lap, and the little sewing room around her is packed with folded stacks of cloth, a basket of yarn, wooden spools of thread and a cup of something warm going cold on the table. A tortoiseshell clip holds back her gray hair. And right on top of the softest pile of fabric, curled into a neat crescent with her nose tucked down, Chispa is sound asleep, one ear flopped and paws gathered close, completely unbothered by the snip of scissors nearby.
Dogs have a remarkable talent for finding the coziest spot in any room, and freshly folded fabric is hard to beat. It is soft, it holds warmth and, best of all, it smells like their favorite person. Terriers in particular like a snug den-like nest after a busy morning. If you sew or craft with a dog nearby, keep a few safety habits in mind. Pins, needles, loose thread and buttons can be dangerous if swallowed, so a magnetic pin dish and a lidded notions box are worth having. Giving your pup a designated blanket or bed beside your workspace can also save the good fabric from being claimed.
Rosa does not have the heart to move her helper. Somewhere in the finished quilt, there will surely be a few white and tan hairs stitched right in.
