The Rain Started Pouring and Grandma Headed to the Porch. Pip Had One Question.
Soft rain drums on the porch roof and spills off the eaves in silver strands. Grandma June sits on the covered porch in a faded denim shirt, her long silver braid resting over one shoulder, gazing out at the wet green yard with a small, contented smile. Potted flowers along the railing are drinking up every drop, and the lawn beyond glistens under the gray sky. Tucked right beside her, Pip the Yorkshire Terrier sits close, his blue and tan coat a little tousled and his pointed ears perked. He tilts his head up toward her face, eyes bright, as if checking that she is enjoying the rain as much as he is.
Yorkshire Terriers may be tiny, but they were originally developed as working terriers and still carry a brave, lively personality. They often bond strongly with their people and love to be close. Their fine, silky coats are more like human hair than fur, and while they shed little, they need regular brushing to prevent tangles. Yorkies also tend to feel the cold and damp more than bigger dogs, so on rainy days a dry porch, a sweater or a cozy blanket can help. After any wet walk, gently towel them off and comb through the coat so mats do not form.
There is no rush to go anywhere today. June has her porch, her quiet rain and a small, attentive friend who would not rather be anywhere else.
