Grandma Climbed Onto the Porch Swing for a Breather. Pip Had Bigger Plans.

The rope swing has slowed to a gentle sway, and both riders have drifted off. Grandma June leans back against the cushions in her denim shirt, eyes closed, her thick silver braid falling down over her shoulder. Her face is completely relaxed in an afternoon doze. Snuggled against her chest, Pip has curled into a soft bundle of blue and tan fur, chin resting on one paw and eyes squeezed shut, perfectly content. The backyard around them is a patchwork of potted herbs, a watering can, a wooden fence and green leaves, all quiet in the afternoon light.

Many small dogs love to sleep pressed against their people, and Yorkies are especially known for their affection. Being close offers warmth and a sense of security, which can be particularly important for little breeds that lose body heat more quickly. If your small dog likes to nap on high spots like a porch swing, bed or couch, watch for leaps down, which can strain their legs and backs over time. Pet steps or a ramp are an easy fix. Short daytime naps can be refreshing for older adults too, but if you find yourself extra sleepy all the time, it is worth checking in with your doctor.

The garden can wait and so can the chores. For now, June and Pip have found their perfect spot, swaying ever so slightly in the warm afternoon air.
