Grandma Headed Down to the Old Dock to Fish. Pip Took the Lookout Post.
A small dock juts out over still green water at the edge of the yard, its gray planks worn smooth by years of sun and rain. Grandma June sits at the end of it in her denim shirt and glasses, silver braid trailing down her back, both hands wrapped around the handle of a fishing rod. She is smiling to herself, maybe at a nibble, maybe just at the quiet. Standing beside her on the boards, Pip holds his ground like a tiny lookout, ears pricked high and silky coat ruffled by the breeze, his dark eyes fixed on something just beyond the dock.
Water and small dogs call for a little extra care. Yorkies are light and can be swept off balance easily, and not every dog is a confident swimmer, so a well-fitted dog life jacket is a smart choice around docks and ponds. Pond water can contain bacteria, parasites or harmful algae, so bring fresh drinking water and discourage your pup from lapping at the shore. Fishhooks, lures and line are also real dangers for curious noses. Keep tackle closed and out of reach, and never leave a baited hook lying on the dock. If a dog does swallow a hook, it needs a vet right away.
The fish may or may not cooperate today. Either way, June has an excellent companion keeping watch, and the pond has never looked more peaceful.
